Echoes of Dissent Ep 4 - They’re Killing The Journalists In Gaza
They’re Killing the Journalists in Gaza Is the truth being silenced by the bullet? One song, one truth. Is there a war against journalists? We dive into David Rovics’ powerful protest ballad, 'They’re Killing The Journalists In Gaza'. Rovics—an indie folk troubadour known for chronicling injustice—released this track as a raw, acoustic indictment of over 250 journalist deaths in Gaza since 2023. We will compare this body count with the total of about 200 journalist fatalities in the five major wars since 1865. We’ll unpack the lyrics, some of the names behind the tragic numbers, and show why silencing journalists is a war crime. We will offer the opportunity on a future programme to anyone who wishes to offer hard fact-checkable evidence that proves the deaths mentioned in this episode were not illegal extrajudicial killings - were not murder. This is a chilling song about disturbing events. Please press play. Traversing the centuries and musical genres to dive into one song that cries out ‘This is wrong!’

A Sonic Youth ep 237 - Hiss Golden Messenger, Neil Young
Oliver looks at 'I'm People', the great new album of sunny Americana from Hiss Golden Messenger. Also, Oliver's favourite Neil Young album 20 years after its release. 'Living with War' was a fiesty anti-war and anti-bush protest record, backed up by plenty of that inconic Neil Young guitar noise. Follow @asonicyouthpodcast on Insta and Facebook. This show is part of the Free FM 89.0 YOUTH ZONE. Made with support of NZ on Air.

The Paleface Parabola - 06-05-2026
I long for the uneventful life more and more at the tender age of 69. But ruefully admit that I probably wouldn’t know what to do with it if it came. It took aid to get to Studio A from a surprising source, and we proceeded to get it on with point, purpose, and joy. Our list of listeners and associate producers is expansive and expanding. It's gratifying. And so is the oppurtunity to gather together and add some music and what is hopefully a unique one hour and 58 minute trip thru a wide tunnel of sound, context, and topical. Five sounds and some mystery now follow... Liz Phair, The Sheepdogs, The Savage Resurrection, The Parlor Greens, and Ron Carter get happy. And the Mystery Man casts his line with a Salmon Dance, to end our melee. If you miss this show, you miss a prime opportunity to ‘Wok This Way’.

Some Canadian artists in this episode, too – the Spinney Brothers from Nova Scotia, and John Reischman & the Jaybirds from British Columbia. Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice and Tim O’Brien all contribute, and NZ’s HCBB have some ‘Good Clean Fun’. Lots of fun, actually.

Dust, Digits and Disappointment
The Premise: We have locked @Deep_insessionz host #SSSD inside the Free FM vault. Under the cold gaze of a random number generator, he must excavate a Detour Du Jour from the sediment of forgotten LPs and CDs. We sought sonic gold; he found only the entropy of ancient plastic. The Findings: Lung-clogging dust. Binary ghosts. Absolute, crushing disappointment.
